With the festive season just around the corner, our thoughts turn to Christmas events – a special time of year, when the grounds begin to glisten, crackling fires are lit, and the delicious smells of mince pies and mulled wine fill the house.

Christmas Market

Date: Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th December. Location: Drumlanrig Castle.

Nothing beats a Christmas Market – and Drumlanrig’s is truly one of a kind. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Castle, the bustling marquee on the front lawn is brimming with talented crafters and delicious seasonal treats.

Sip a warming mulled wine as carols fill the air, or pop into the Castle Tearoom for a hearty lunch. Take a magical horse and carriage ride (Sunday only), or step inside the Castle itself for a Guided Tour.

Entry is just £5 per car, giving you access not only to the Market but also to the beautiful Gardens – the perfect setting for an extra special festive day out.

Santa's Grotto, Breakfast with Santa & Craft Workshops

Dates: Friday – Sunday, 5th – 21st December. Location: Drumlanrig Castle Stableyard.

A magical experience awaits at Drumlanrig this December, with enchanting moments designed especially for little ones. Enjoy a festive breakfast in the Castle Tearoom, where Santa himself will join the fun, or step into the transformed Stableyard to discover his beautiful Grotto – a truly unforgettable encounter.

For creative kids, festive workshops offer the chance to make their own seasonal decorations and treats – the perfect way to add a personal touch to the celebrations.

Castle Tours

Dates: Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th December. Location: Drumlanrig Castle.

This festive season, visitors have the opportunity to step inside Dumfries & Galloway’s iconic Pink Palace. Join a special daytime tour on the 6th or 7th of December, or opt for an exclusive evening experience on the 6th, complete with canapés and fizz as you explore the Castle by night.

It’s the perfect way to soak up a little art, history, and local heritage – all wrapped up in the magic of Christmas at Drumlanrig.

2. Wreath Making at Dabton House

Date: 11th & 12th December, Location: Dabton House, Thornhill.

Enjoy a magical wreath-making experience at Dabton House. Guided by Dabton’s Head Gardener, create the perfect festive decoration for your front door and choose from two experiences: a relaxed two-course lunch or an evening of fizz and canapés.

3. Dumfries Choral Society Winter Concerts

Dates: Saturday 22nd November & Monday 22nd December, St John’s Church

Hit those high notes! Dumfries Choral Society return with a series of concerts this season, filling the air with beautiful choral music and festive melodies. From their November performance to the Christmas concert in December, there’s something to delight every music lover.

4. Enchanting Christmas Time at Dumfries House

Date: 1st – 19th December. Location: Dumfries House

Delve into the fascinating history of one of Scotland’s most beautiful country homes while it glows with festive candlelight. Guests are welcomed with a glass of Prosecco before enjoying a Christmas-themed guided tour of Dumfries House, exploring its renowned artwork and Thomas Chippendale furniture. Afterward, relax in the Library with coffee and mince pies to complete the experience. Sumptuous dining packages are also available on additional dates.

6. Dumfries Pantomime

Date: Friday 28th November – Saturday 13th December, varying times, Theatre Royal, Dumfries.

The perfect Christmas activity has to be a visit to the Pantomime – oh, yes it is! The Guild of Players will be dropping the curtain and inviting you all to their 2025 pantomime – Aladdin by Alex Jackson. Escape to the land of fairytales and make-believe with a few hours of wonderful, family-fun at the Theatre Royal this Christmas.
